Puntarenas Carnival: Last week of the month. Fun in the sun.
FIESTA DE LOS DIABLITOS, uno de los pocos festivales indígenas, que se realiza en la reserva indígena Boruca, cerca de Curré. (La fecha varía)

Fiesta of the Diablos: South of San Isidro de El General in Boruca Indian village of Rey Curré. Recreation of the fight between Indians (diablitos) and the Spanish (a bull), in which colorful wooden mask and costumes create the scene. Sale of crafts, dances and fireworks.

Marzo March
DIA DEL BOYERO. Se celebra en San Antonio de Escazú el segundo domingo de marzo. No se pierda el colorido desfile de carretas y la bendición de animales y cosechas. Traiga su cámara.

Día del Boyero (Oxcart Drivers Day): Second Sunday of March, in San Antonio de Escazú. Colorful parade of oxcarts, blessing of animals and crops by local priests.
19 de marzo DIA DE SAN JOSE, Patrono de la capital.

Day of San José: 19th, religious celebrations in all towns and neighborhoods with that name.

Holy Week:  Dramatic processions depicting the crucifixion. San José virtually shuts down Thurs-Sun.

11 de abril  DIA DE JUAN SANTAMARIA, en honor al héroe nacional muerto en 1856 en la Batalla de Rivas contra William Walker.

Juan Santamaría Day: 11th, commemorates Costa Rica's national hero, a barefoot soldier who heroically died in the battle with William Walker's troops in 1856.  bands parades,

Mayo May

1ero de mayo DIA INTERNACIONAL DE LOS TRABAJADORES.

Labor Day: May 1. Marches. President gives annual "state of the nation" address. Congress elects new leaders.

29 de junio DIA DE SAN PEDRO Y SAN PABLO. Se realizan algunas procesiones de tipo religioso.

Julio July

Mediados de julio FIESTA DE LA VIRGEN DEL MAR. Se celebra en Puntarenas y playas del Coco, con regata y desfile de embarcaciones.

25 de julio ANEXION DEL PARTIDO DE NICOYA.

Annexation of Guanacaste: 25th. Celebrates Guanacaste's decision to join Costa Rica instead of Nicaragua in 1824. Fiestas in Liberia, folk dances, parades, cattle shows, bull teasing, concerts.

Agosto August

2 de agosto VIRGEN DE LOS ANGELES.

Virgin of Los Angeles: 2nd. Honors Costa Rica's Patron Saint. La Negrita, with nationwide pilgrimage to the Basilica in Cartago.
15 de agosto DIA DE LA MADRE.

Mother's Day: 15th.

Septiembre September

15 de setiembre DI A DE LA INDEPENDENCIA.

Independence Day: 15th. Gigantic relay race encompasses the entire Central America isthmus. Student runners carry the "Freedom Torch" from Guatemala to Costa Rica. The torch arrives at the colonial capital of Cartago precisely at 6:00 pm on 14th, and everyone, nationwide, sings the National Anthem. Kids have nocturnal homemade-lantern parades. Uniformed school children parade the next day.

Octubre October

12 de octubre DIA DE LAS CULTURAS.

En limón se celebra con un carnaval.

Limón Carnival: Week-long street dances, parades, concerts. It's "Mardi Gras" to a Caribbean beat.

Noviembre November

2 de noviembre DIA DE LOS MUERTOS.

All Soul's Day: 2nd. "Day of the Dead" is observed with family visits to cemetery remember loved ones.

Festejos Populares: (Year-End Festival). 25 December 01 January 01  in south San José fairgrounds at Zapote. Amusement park with rides, food, bullteasing, music, fireworks. The country's biggest! (Was greatly reduced this past year when the Bull Ring was condemned.) 26 de Diciembre  Tope

Tope: 26th, a horse parade to end all horse parades in downtown San José.
